Autism Center Program Special Education Teacher

Purpose Statement:
The Special Education Teacher provides instruction, assessment and program planning for special education students with learning disabilities. Other responsibilities include, monitoring and evaluating student progress and behavior; researching, obtaining and providing instructional materials for special education services; serving as a resource for students and parents and working collaboratively with classroom teachers.
Essential Functions:
- Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individual learning plans within established lesson plans
- Administers developmental testing and subject specific tests, for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student achievement; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals
- Assesses student’s progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g. behavioral, academic needs, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, and parents for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, and achieving established objectives in support of the school improvement plan
- Monitors students’ behavior/activities in a variety of education environments
- Participates in and/or coordinates a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. progress reports, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting legal requirements
- Perform other duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work.
Qualifications:
- Colorado Department of Education Special Education License
- Experience writing IEP’s and using Enrich preferred
- Must have prior successful teaching experience in an urban setting
- Must have a Colorado State license or a BA and as passing score on the Praxis or PLACE exam in relevant subject area(s), including special education endorsement
- Twice a year bonus provided

Pay: $61,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year

Our One on One Instructional Assistants (1:1 IA) collaborate with the Special Education teacher, specialists (BCBAs, Speech Language Pathologists, and Occupational Therapists), for creation and implementation of Individualized Education Programs, and oversight of student programs related to all goals and objectives. The 1:1 IA supports the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, physical and daily living needs of a student who has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing behaviors and minimizing disruptions.
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and meeting IEP goals.
- Attends meetings and trainings for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Monitors and implements their student’s daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Assists in conducting testing and assessment, multi-media activities, general office and clerical tasks, record-keeping, technology use, discipline, and other activities.
- Assists student as needed for restroom and handwashing breaks for the purpose of attending to the student’s personal hygiene and care needs.
- Escorts students for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from a destination.
- Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. playground, hallways, bus loading areas, cafeteria, car lane, classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned based on the best interest of students.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, specifically autism
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Minimum High School diploma/GED plus proof of passing the TABE D Adult Education Test for Reading and Math; or transcript(s) verifying at least 48 semester hours of undergraduate coursework from an accredited college or university.
- Experience as an instructional aide supporting a teacher or multiple teachers; other relevant experience working with elementary aged students in a structured setting may be considered.
Salary and benefits
- Salary is based on experience and degree; range is $35,000 to $53,000

Essential responsibilities
- Follows the daily schedule as prescribed; adjusts to work assignments and/or schedule changes
- Supervise individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

- Supervises students during transitions through the school building, outside of the school building and into other buildings on campus.
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning initially introduced by the classroom teacher;
- Assists the teacher in preparing materials for direct instructional activity, including locating, copying, laminating, collating, distributing and/or grouping materials to support instructional activities planned by the teacher.
- Administers student assessments;
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning initially introduced by the classroom teacher;
- Participates wholeheartedly in professional development and team meetings/collaborations;
- Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up and assigned by the classroom teacher;
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- A high school diploma OR equivalency.
- Ability to continuously adapt to an ever changing environment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move up to [25–50] pounds (e.g., instructional materials, adaptive equipment, assisting students).
- Experience as a an instructional aide supporting a teacher or multiple teachers.
- Other relevant experience working with elementary aged students in a structured setting may be considered.
- Associates degree OR a passing grade on the Work Keys test.

Pay: $3,000.00 – $5,000.00 per month
